26 Mar 2012 - Update Highest Rated Pain Stories Highest Rated Gain Stories Vodafail Local Facebook Page
Dear visitor,

Since its inception Vodafail.com has made a significant contribution towards raising awareness of the problems and issues faced by Vodafone customers.

Vodafone Australia customers have had the opportunity to voice their concerns, their fears and their troubles from every corner of Australia and beyond our borders. You have gathered the courage to stand up for your rights as consumers and to make your voice heard.

Each and every person who shared their story should have a sense of pride in this achievement and the changes that have occurred since the start of Vodafail.com.

More recently, traffic to Vodafail.com has declined significantly. Having achieved the goal of raising awareness and promoting concrete action in early 2011, we have now reached the point of closing Vodafail to new complaints. The site will remain online for as long as possible as a reminder and an example of what is possible when we share our experiences.

It has been a privilege to run this initiative and I'm am forever grateful for the help and support I've received. In particular I would like to thank Melissa, David and Travis for their continued efforts over the past 15 months. I'm also thankful and humbled by the support of ACCAN, Choice magazine and a wide range of media outlets, blogs and websites.

You can still browse existing stories and find out how to file a complaint if you are experiencing problems.

Until next time,

Adam Brimo

So how can one call centre be so incompetent? Are they not trainer correctly or just lack intelligence? Sick of being constantly transferred to the incorrect department! Then sick of being promised calls back that never happen. Not to mention being put on hold for long periods of time and having the incompetent call centre rep come back with an answer to a question I never asked.

I don't care where the Call Centre is, as long as they know how to do their job

18885 Someone from SA thinks vodafone is MEGA at 22 Jul 2011 09:10:26 PM
Was offered last 2 months of my 24 month contract free in order to gauge reception improvements etc in order for Vodafail to retain me as a customer. To confirm, I asked the customer officer again, "are you referring to call expenses above the cap?". He said, "yes." The contract has now ended and they expect me to pay the bills. I asked the Supervisor today to pull the recorded call to confirm what was said. The Super stated they don't record all calls. Can you believe that. A telecommunications company who don't record the calls. So basically my word against theirs. I attempted contact with a friends overseas mobile a number of times which was displayed as 1 sec in time @ $2.32 each. No F@#%$&^% way I'm gonna pay! I knew how many rings before the call would pick up and go to VM. Nobody at Vodafail is willing to help even though things were documented. I am simply not going to pay - take me to court, I don't care. They are all incompitent liars !!!!!!!!!!!!
26 Jul 2011 01:26:37 PM: Get in touch with the TIO.. Few people know that if your ph company cannot satisfy your complaint, once it has been referred by the TIO, it costs the company at least $1400 to dispute your case. Therefore any disputes that come in under this amount, they are inclined to just award you what you are asking for. But you MUST get a case number from the TIO to really convince them.. Good luck.. :o)

Tired of being on hold when contacting Vodafone support ??? - According to the cheat sheet from the TV report the other night - to bypass their phone system and get to an actual person then "Press 1 for mobile services, then 5. You can enter your mobile number or just hold. Avoid the voice activation system.". Haven't tried it to see if it works but is supposed to you to a human contact much quicker - not that that will help much based on the fact that many of their helpdesk people are flat out speaking English.

I'm located in Adelaide city and over the last two days, Thursday 21/7 and today Friday 22/7 I haven't been able to use internet from my iPhone 3g or 2g. This is unusual though I admit.
24 Jul 2011 04:23:48 PM: Interesting - I am in Adelaide too and have had exactly the same problem. I have been having ongoing data problems, but it started looking like Vodafail had got it right. too bad!
27 Jul 2011 02:03:43 AM: I'm in the city too, what started out as poor service has just got worse and worse. They investigated it and told me there was no problem and that my area has good reception.... yet 2 Voda Mobiles and a Voda mobile Internet all have next to no reception. Funny that the one Telstra mobile in the house always seems to have 5 bars and has never dropped out once though....

for the past 3 weeks now ive been having little to no 3G reception at my WORK place which is where i use my phone heavily for well......work!
called up voda to tell them that Clayton South area has been having issues, the guy told me it was has been an Australian wide outage and they have fixed the issue and that i should reset my phones settings......YET when i try to explain to him that at home (East Melb) i have PERFECT reception, net works, calls go straight through, text, mms & emails all work a charm. YET he insist that its a phone issue, to shut him up i did as he requested (note had reset my phone many times prior to calling up voda) and what do you know! same thing, no reception!

seriously.......you tell them its a problem with their network, they convince you its YOUR phone.
21 Jul 2011 11:57:53 PM: Yea they blame the phone it seems even though they know there are network issues. You're paying for a service that they are having difficulty providing, it warrants a complaint and some action. If they can't sort it out then you can go to the TIO (details on the how to complain page).

Unable to purchase a car after my car died because Vodafail left a default notice on my record (not my fault! joys of getting account for brother!) even though I have paid all outstanding monies and the collection agency assured me that they have notified Vodafail of my payment. Now paying high car hire fees and Vodafail doesn't give a damn (tells me it takes 15 BUSINESS DAYS to get stuff done). EPIC EPIC FAIL!

I travel around Australia quite extensively and when first trialled 'Vodafail' it worked but alas 6 months later when converted our all our business to their contract, it started to go horribly wrong. We started to get very poor reception in major towns and no reception in many of the smaller towns. They are complete dead spots for us now and have to resort in using our customers phone to get the office!!! The next thing is the call drop out rates are even more horrible as needing to recall 2-3 times during a conversation

18867 Someone from NSW thinks vodafone is Still haven't cancelled my Service at 21 Jul 2011 01:53:16 PM
Back in December 2010, I cancelled my contract with Vodafone because the failed in providing network coverage on repeated occasions, I would have to walk to or stand in parks or streets to get reception at times.
Several Phone conversations prior with Vodafone, I told them the service had to be cancelled without penalising me for ending the contract early.
NOw - 7 months AFTEr the account has been closed - I'm STILL getting monthly Bills.

"Vodafone,
yet again you disappoint me. You've sent be a bill for closing my account when I have had serious discussions with your resolution team regarding the lack of service and coverage that I had been receiving.
As stated in my conversations with VXXXX and subsequent email - 9/11/10 that I was perservering with my account 042X XXX XXX providing you didn't make continuous errors in billing and service, like you did with number 042X XXX XXX. But you did make serious errors in not having signal in my home and poor reception within the CBD - therefore not supplying me with the service you promised in contract.
This is why the service was been cancelled and I do not expect to pay any penalty for exiting this contract.

18864 Someone from NSW thinks vodafone is "Call Catcher" con at 21 Jul 2011 12:02:14 PM
Vodafone continually enables "Call Catcher" on my phone meaning callers receive a message that I'm unavailable after my phone has only rung for a short time. I go through the steps to disable Call Catcher but some time later find that it has been enabled again.

Even with Call Catcher disabled, my phone will only ring for up to about 20 seconds before callers receive a message that I'm unavailable (when in fact I am available but not always able to answer within 20 seconds).

"Call Catcher" and short ringing duration is obviously an attempt by Vodafone to have their customers make more calls by having to return missed calls (that often need not have been missed calls had the ringing duration been longer or Call Catcher not intervened).

18862 Someone from NSW thinks vodafone is at 21 Jul 2011 10:08:50 AM
To be honest, Vodafone's phone service has not been that bad for me. Sure at times, it does take a bit of time for calls to connect but apart from that the service hasnt been too bad, I guess I have been one of the luckier ones.

However, some of the things Vodafone does or has done are a head scratcher. For instance, I pay bills on time and the first time I didnt, Vodafone sent me a message saying that if I did not pay my outstanding bill by the next day, they would place restrictions on my service. Bear in mind, this was two days after the due date.
Since that time, I get messages sending me reminders to pay my bill by the due date, even though I have paid it already.

Another aspect with which I have been dissatisfied with is when my contract finished. When it finished, I advised Vodafone that I would like to switch to a month-to-month contract. When asked why I wanted to do that when I could upgrade my phone now, I told them that I wanted to wait for the new iPhone to come out. The lady I spoke to said the dumbest thing to me which was "The iPhone 4 is out now, why not upgrade to that?". I told the lady that what is the point in getting locked into a phone which will soon be out of date and be locked in for two years, which she could not comprehend.

There are two reasons why I am staying with Vodafone at the moment:
1. no other service provider has a cheaper infinite cap; and
2. when it comes time to get a new contract, I will express my disappointment and get a better deal with them.

I live in the eastern suburbs of Melbourne, no tall buildings, no tram lines (not for 20 km's or so. No real reason except that Vodafone is selling a product it doesn't actually have.

18856 Someone from NSW thinks vodafone is incompetent at 21 Jul 2011 07:29:18 AM
Migrated from 3 to Vodafone in an effort to resolve reception issues ( live on top of a hill, line of sight to 3 towers...but hey ).
Migration for one phone took 4 days and about 3 hours on the phone
Migration of second (wifes) took nearly a month and another 8 hours on the phone to customer service.
Received first bill - all the agreed conditions were incorrect and overbilled - another 3 hours and 12 different parties to get that resolved.

Data is atrocious everywhere, and coverage ( original issue ) is marginally better but still not great.

And why is it that the helpdesk has to put you on hold for 3 minutes everytime they need to look up a detail? You spend more time on hold that resolving the issue.

Phone internet. Half the time won't load pages. I have had to turn my internet in and off over 10 times just to post this. 4 bars of signal (full) but my battery usage meter displays my signal strength as a dirty brown (v. Weak) with tiny green bits here and there (clear signal). Funnily enough I'm no more then a k from the nearest tower in the open outside at night. Should have a clean run. Apparently not, apparently its normal to have to reset your phone 4 times and your internet connection 30 times in the course of 4 hours of using the internet, mainly using 1 or 2 websites during that time. Practically unusable.

18848 Someone from QLD thinks vodafone is IT'S AN INSULT! at 20 Jul 2011 09:26:35 PM
I have totally run out of patience with Vodafone now. For the past 5 months where I have moved to a new suburb (wasn't my choice by the way), I did not my area was only covered to outdoor. (and even then had 2 stars for normal calls!) Until recently, the signal was barely fine for indoor but with lots of drop outs. Mobile internet was technically impossible. On the way to work on the Ipswich line, signal was really crap as well and I only get internet access for 70% of the time.

Now for the past week, the problem has become unbearable. It's now unusable, and I have both Three and Vodafone. Almost impossible to connect and even if I get it, drop outs will occur within 30 secs. Mobile internet on the train line is now even worse, and can only use it less than 50% of the time. (remaining time is to stare outside waiting for stuff to load!!!) What are my options beside just complain to Vodafone and expect to hear "your area is not covered indoor, so sorry" type crap? I've been resorting to VOIP via application on my mobile.

18847 Someone from NSW thinks vodafone is Epic fail! at 20 Jul 2011 09:02:23 PM
I currently pay $69 a month on my plan with Vodafone.

Internet Connection: I only have internet connection about 10% of the time and even then it takes a lot of time and "refreshing" to get it working. Vodafone once suggested I "Reset Network Settings". Sometimes I'm lucky and it gives it a bit of a wake up call for about 5 minutes - then I lose my internet again. They also suggested turning off the "3g". Great help that was. My phone is constantly "Searching...".

Phone calls: Calls constantly drop out or whoever is trying to call me gets put straight through to voicemail. Other times I try to call out & it says "Call Failed". Dah.

Messaging: I often find a little "!" when trying to send messages. Or my messages don't go through for hours.

Voicemail: I don't remember the last time Vodafone notified me that I had a new voicemail message.

Considering the amount of money I spend to enjoy the benefits of having an iPhone, you'd think I'd be pretty satisfied. Too bad I chose Vodafone as my provider.

Epic Fail!

After 7 months on my HTC and never once coming even closer to exceeding my 4GB limit, I receive a msg from VF stating that they will discinnect me as I have reached $555 of data in 2 weekds!!! After trying to cal, I realised I had already been disconnected. When I get past Lara, they tell me I have racked up $1100 in data in 2 weeks, over and above 4GB. This is 10GB of data, something like 10 movies or more!!! I have not changed the usage of my phone nor have I changed any settings to allow this much data to be downloaded. THey can't help me now as the bill has not been issued and to continue on my merry way and it will be sorted out at the ehnd of the month, wheras possibly another $1k of data could possibly be downloaded. After 1 1/2 hours of not being able to resolve this with Mumbai, I gave up Today I recieve a msg stating because of my excessive usage my international roaming ahs been disconnected (I havent been overseas for 1 year), again I try and call and again they have disconnected my phone. I now sit here typing this with no phone and a bill of $1200. Tomorrow morning I am marching into my VF shop and disconnecting. 18839 Someone from WA thinks vodafone is massive overcharge at 20 Jul 2011 05:31:27 PM
On 11 July and 12 July 2011 there have been three charges for Internet use from my HTC totalling $675.41 for a total of approx 17 minutes. In one instance the usage details show 930863Kb in 6:16:07 minutes being $413.16 in cost (this is not a typo). The phone is on a $49 cap and has barely ever exceeded this cap in the previous 10 months or so. What is going on?
20 Jul 2011 08:15:40 PM: Sounds like it's time to give Vodafone a ring and find out what is wrong. If they aren't helpful you can go to the TIO and they will help negotiate with Vodafone. But Vodafone is your first point of call.

20 Jul 2011 08:21:46 PM: Check out my usage on 18843, $1200 and I have no phone as they have disconnected me!!! Same unexplainable data usage.I tried Mumbai about as useful as Ti&* on a bull!!!
20 Jul 2011 08:32:33 PM: I spent well over an hour speaking with a "supervisor" and was told the charges would stand. I explained that it was clear looking at the history of charges, that the sudden tenfold increase in internet charges from 8 July that the fault lay with them. I said I'd be contacting the TIO and the police as it is theft and therefore criminal. I heard back from the supervisor about 10 minutes later to say that he had been discussing this with his manager and they will be "raising an investigation into the backend billing section regarding this account but were certainly not guaranteeing or suggesting there will be a credit". This may take 5 to 7 days. They said a note was made to hold any activity re collection of payment for this account (valid for 10 days, but account not due for 12 days anyway) Apparently this can be extended.

I think this could be a very widespread problem as I've since read about changes in how Vodafone are charging internet usage from 8 July. Here's a statement they made http://www.gizmodo.com.au/2011/06/vodafone-glitch-made-bittorrent-voip-data-free/#comment-156142
20 Jul 2011 09:07:31 PM: Ahh yea, hopefully they discover the issue and correct your bill. It does sound like they are having problems with tracking internet usage, especially considering they have come out and said that they weren't actually counting secure/voip/bit torrent data.

Hopefully anyone that has a larger bill than normal will be able to file a complaint and have it adjusted. But it looks like it takes the threat of the TIO for them to actually investigate the problem.

21 Jul 2011 12:04:10 PM: Just reread my entry above ... should read "sudden hundredfold increase" not "tenfold increase". Is anyone else noticing huge increase in charges for internet with their smartphone?
25 Jul 2011 09:18:12 AM: Please update me with outcome as I have exactly the same problem as you. I believe this is a wide spread problem. See posts 18843, 18907,18902, 18903 and many more that I have noted since 8 July 2011.

No real problems in Sydney, but recently was down at Perisher. Great snow, but sadly I had an injury which meant I had to just watch the kids ski :(
The point is I bought a Vodafail mobile broadband devce and took my laptop, thinking I use this down there. Sadly, while my phone (Blackberry) worked, the mobile broadband did not (or only for seconds at a time) - a wasted week!

The funniest thing about the problem was when I was speaking with the company about drop outs it did it 6 times. His comment ... "I see what you mean".

In their defense I find their billing to be OK.

I've been having service issues for the past 10 months. I logged multiple faults and was given for goodwill 25% off both my handsets recurring monthly charge for the next 3 months. I'm in Rydalmere.

But i still experience faults and issues across Sydney. Notably on Sydney's 2nd biggest transport corridor that being Victoria Rd. I will be calling VHA daily to complain about the lack of service. It was quite a challenge though, with the service being so bad I have trouble even speaking to the CSRs in VHA's fault centre.

VHA claim their agreements don't actual specify a speed on 3G access however I've noted in many spots, notably Gladsville, Rydalmere, Top Ryde etc non-existent 3G access (despite having full bars). Internet speeds remain slow at best and as a normal just not working. I would also argue that contract agreement should specify a mininum speed since i could simply argue that if a web page is not up 10 seconds then that is no access. Indeed how long should I wait for a website to load up. Ten minutes, an hour?

I'm a manager for a major telco and I will be running a campaign of terror against VHA till they either improve their services or allow me to port away to another carrier.

Being in the biz I am quite surprised at the situation though. at the pub its common knowledge that another major carrier just upgraded all of VHA's internet transit services (3rd and 4th quarter of fy10). We're talking about gigabits of extra bandwidth and yet the service remains crap.

That said I've noticed in CBD locations the service to respond fairly well. Slow internet speeds (feels like 256-512kbps) but at least they work and the latency is fairly low.

Whilst their 'retentions' team are sympathetic, they refuse to cancel my contract for a service I'm not getting and which they have admitted on email does not live up to scratch - equally to ability to complain about this was impossible osme months ago and now whenever I call, I have to spend 10m just going through the whole situaiton all over again....and again.

I've experienced continuously poor reception and exceptionally slow downloads to the extent that I don't even bother accessing my emails or using the internet on my iPhone unless absolutely necessary.

Having approached four Vodafone stores in Sydney to address a multitude of problems which also relate to billing, I've been dismissed by their service representatives, who've claimed that the reception issues were previously addressed. After three incredibly frustrating and failed attempts to resolve the matter via Vodafone's non-existent "customer service" call centres offshore, I want my contract cancelled immediately.

I'd like to know why Vodafone is not being held accountable for not delivering to their service and product offering, when clearly so many customers have been adversely affected.

18805 Someone from QLD thinks vodafone is Very Fail at 20 Jul 2011 01:26:22 PM
Swapped from a Vodafone prepaid mobile to an Apple iPhone on a plan. This was mainly for Internet access and a mobile email. Changed over about month ago. I cannot believe how slow the Internet is and on about three quarters of attempts to use I suddenly get a message saying that the server failed to respond. How quick is this when Vodafone a constantly advertising how good the new upgraded network is. I have noticed on my on line billing that for one attempt to use the internet I am being charged in excess of $10. Very poor as I could not connect and yet I am still charged for trying. I will definitely be raising this and other issues when the bill is due. Must say also that while a happy Vodafone customer for several years, this past month has changed my opinion very much. Also less than impressed with staff at both the Vodafone shop and help lines. Being a novice with mobile internet and an iphone which I did explain to the sales person, no help or assistance was provided in usage or applications etc. I was told to look it up on line. I do not have a personal computer at home ( one of the reasons I wanted an iPhone) and advised the salesperson of this and for some reason was given a mobile internet connector for only $1 more on the plan I was going on. I returned to the store the next day and was brushed off by another salesman saying it was a freebie. I know that over the 24 month plan that I will pay $24 for absolutely nothing. No wonder Vodafone is so cashed up. Feel very let down, promised things that are just not happening and will pursue either getting out of the contract if things are not improved to what I am actually paying for. I also left nearly 3 weeks ago a message for the store to contact me and am still waiting. Phoned the helpline and was told that my "new phone" probably had dust on the sim card (no internet access)and to remove it and dust it and replace. Very sound technical support from Vodafone.

My reception cuts out 20-30 times a day from full bar to "No Service" when im in the same spot. it's ridiculous that this issue is occuring and very frustrating as i have to keep resetting the mobile in order to get the reception back. I have complained about this numerous times to get me nowhere and as a vodafone customer for many years, the service i have received for this problem has not helped me one bit. Paying for a service that claims to be the best when I can't even use my phone properly is the biggest waste of money i have ever spent. As soon as the contract is over i'll be leaving this company. I live in Carindale QLD, have 4-5 bars of signal, and have been having issues for the last 6 weeks at my house, where I will browse internet on either my BlackBerry or my iPhone or using my latptop using a VMConnect, and after about 2 minutes the data just stops... you have to manually disconnect, turn the device off, then back on again, then it will work for about another 2 mins (sometimes I get lucky and get 10mins) then stop again. Late at night it seems to be a lot better, but during peak periods of the day it is shocking.

After all these issues you really would think that they would have sorted this out by now...

I went to Sydney on work the other weeks and everything worked great. as soon as I come back to Brisbane, back to the same ol' crap service.

As a bit of a GSM junkie who works in the industry, for god sake Vodafone you have Radio Access Network attachment issues - likely being caused by the HLR being out of synch with the GGSN - do something about it !!!

Been on the phone to billing today.I have been trying to stop since January premium text messages arriving and being billed to me.Rahul at Vodafone tells me that they are aware of the problem and have been trying to rectify it as I have been told twice that they have fixed it and I have done it over the net but the account stills is being billed and the 12 numbers keep coming in and being billed.I asked them if they were alerting the public to this problem as unless you vigilantly check your account you will be billed for a service that you thought you had stopped. This is basically a warning to check your bills as Vodafone according to Rahul have escalated the problem but are not planning on a public announcement.I figure it wouldnt be too hard through their own SMS system but they don't seem interested in alerting the public to a problem that has been going on for a lengthy period of time.
