Dear visitor,

Since its inception Vodafail.com has made a significant contribution towards raising awareness of the problems and issues faced by Vodafone customers.

Vodafone Australia customers have had the opportunity to voice their concerns, their fears and their troubles from every corner of Australia and beyond our borders. You have gathered the courage to stand up for your rights as consumers and to make your voice heard.

Each and every person who shared their story should have a sense of pride in this achievement and the changes that have occurred since the start of Vodafail.com.

More recently, traffic to Vodafail.com has declined significantly. Having achieved the goal of raising awareness and promoting concrete action in early 2011, we have now reached the point of closing Vodafail to new complaints. The site will remain online for as long as possible as a reminder and an example of what is possible when we share our experiences.

It has been a privilege to run this initiative and I'm am forever grateful for the help and support I've received. In particular I would like to thank Melissa, David and Travis for their continued efforts over the past 15 months. I'm also thankful and humbled by the support of ACCAN, Choice magazine and a wide range of media outlets, blogs and websites.

You can still browse existing stories and find out how to file a complaint if you are experiencing problems.

Until next time,

Adam Brimo

3540 Someone from VIC thinks vodafone is Pathetic at 27 Dec 2010 04:19:17 PM
For years I have received terrible phone reception from Vodafone living in suburban Melbourne. I can't hear people, calls drop out, people can't hear me, the phone doesn't get reception at all for hours at a time, sms messages are late in delivery, voicemail messages are delayed for days & this all happens constantly. I've since changed to Telstra where I get better reception in the middle of outback W.A. than with Vodafone in Nunawading.

Notice difference when 3(three) was taken over by Vodafone.
Looks like 3(three) is now on the Vodafone network - although they are yet to admit this. Drops out continually - coverage poor.

Despite Vodaphone saying they are putting in extra towers a number of years ago there is still no coverage in Korumburra Victoria and poor coverage in the southern Mornington Penisula Victoria. Also frequent call drop outs.
No wireless broadband in Western Port Bay Victoria area.

3537 Someone from VIC thinks vodafone is costly at 27 Dec 2010 04:19:05 PM
Ive recently moved to Melb from Sydney - I get a bill $400 over my normal spend amount. So I call Vodafone to question my bill and I am told that its because of network upgrades! They tell me it should be fixed within a couple of months and that it will be worth the wait once the "new" network is up and running and that these kind of things happen in order for a better service. I asked the Vodafone rep why I should be expected to pay for a upgrade and I explained that I keep getting calls dropping out, cant access emails, voice mails that dont come through, and work cant reach me when I am on call - and considering I am in one of the Emergency Services my phone is absolutely required! The phone rep offers me a $112 credit as good will, not as a admission of liability he says. I asked about cancellation fees because of the poor performance and they tell me $998 ! Shonky shonky shonky! Im logging my complaint with the TIO and will be trying my absolute hardest to ditch Vodafone as soon as I can.

3517 Someone from VIC thinks vodafone is Care-less and Crazy! at 27 Dec 2010 04:17:21 PM
I'm trapped into relying on Vodafone through their subsidiary Crazy Johns. Totally unreliable both for coverage (I live in Northcote in Melbourne) and for service and care. All I have EVER had are empty apologies. On one phone call I was on hold for over 5 minutes while the employee read through my endless stream of issues with coverage and bad service. DONT use Vodafone or any company that shares their network.

The past 6 months have been the worse. Constant call drop out even in Melbourne's CBD!!! I try re-dialling only to get busy signals or get the vodafone number you are calling has been switched off only to redial again and get the caller (clearly phone hasnt been switched off). Yesterday my wireless broadband dropped out 25 times in 2 hours... Im on an umlimited plan but my partner is on 49 cap and always go over because he has to text because he cant get through. 3487 Someone from VIC thinks vodafone is in need or a major upgrade.. at 27 Dec 2010 04:14:56 PM
I waited over 3 hours in total of a 6.5 hr phone call. And was then bounced around from wrong department to wrong department (OZ to India & around again). Let's start at the beginning.

I was with 3 mobile broadband and had horrible internet connections with them. So when they started merging they suggested I move to Vodafone because they offered more data for the same price. It started out ok but soon went down hill. I was promised a month free and a free modem. Modem arrived it went well. Then it slowed to a crawl. I rang them. They said there system had started charging me from the first month of the billing cycle, as if I had used 8Gb in a second and then proceeded to charge me above the cap price. I was assured he would ring me back at the end of the month and that my account would be placed into high priority and would be resolved asap.

Well no phone call, but they did leave a voicemail supposedly on my mobile broadband modem! How am I supposed to listen to that? They have my mobile number and they know this is an internet connection. No bill either. SO I contacted them again. Was promised another free month for my pain etc. Soon after the modem stopped connecting to the net at all. Again called same thing, sorry sir, blah blah blah. Worked again but now the connection metre says 4 bars constantly buy 0 data comes through. I have to refresh 6 or more times to get anything to load.

I called again and this was the 6.5 hour call I referred to at the start. Again things were promised and nothing has ever been done. I was then sent two bills totalling $190 odd for the first two months that were supposed to be FREE months.. Not bad VF..

So here we are now. I know the towers are being upgraded in our area "soon" but that does not excuse the poor billing and customer service.

I am signed up to a 3 contract, which I am given understand is owned by Vodaphone.

It is rare for me to have reception. I get no reception at work. At home. At my parents'. In my yard. I'm lucky to get some reception if I wander around in the front yard. There is almost no point having this thing. Even if it were an emergency I don't think I'd be able to call for help.

And even though I paid my bill on time (on the due date) they still, 2 months in a row, charged me a payment dishonour fee of $16.50.

It's beyond a joke.

My service is through Think Mobile. They use Vodafone. I rarely have coverage, but I pay monthly, without fail. I am a sole parent with two children. In the event of a blackout, I need my mobile phone to be working. It usually doesn't. I am told that if I go to Telstra, I'll have coverage everywhere. I'll also have sky-rocketing bills. Telstra charges over and above everyone else. I think that any carrier I go through should be able to guarantee good coverage.

3368 Someone from VIC thinks vodafone is messenger monkeys would be more helpful at 27 Dec 2010 04:06:05 PM
Have had numerous problems with both vodafone (and 3 since their merger).
All started a couple of months ago, got one of their mobile broadband things worked for maybe a month then just refused to connect to the internet. Rang their customer care and all the moron could suggest was to remove the sim card and put it back in each time it didnt work so when he suggested it like a 12th time he couldnt understand why i cracked it and abused him! tried uninstalling it and that still didnt work. Was then told to take it to my local store and they would give me a temporary replacement while they sent it away so went into the store but was told that they couldnt do anything I had to call customer service.
Then got a mobile bill for $1050.00 when i had only used about $60 worth of calls / sms apparently the rest was charges for the internet which I had only used for maybe half an hour one day.
My boyfriend had an iphone with 3 and they tried to charge him $1300 for roaming because there was no reception and we were living in central geelong at that time.
In the end we got sick of fighting with people that just sent us around in circles and called the ombudsman who released us from the contracts, only had to pay $35 for the iphone contract he had as that was the amount of calls that we actually made.
vodafone then tried to overcharge my boyfriends sister as they did to him, once again got the ombudsman involved and got out of the contract only having to pay for the calls that were actually made and not the roaming.

My mobile reception in South Yarra 2km from Melbourne's CBD drops out every day... People constantly tell me that they call and my iPhone goes directly to voice mail, if I drive anywhere more than 15km from CBD my reception drops out. Also they have over billed me and one time they sent me a letter saying that they didn't bill me for the previous month so I would be double billed in my next billing schedule.

If I try to call customer service I am re-directed to an off-shore company that doesn't understand anything I a saying.

Why should I pay $200per month for a phone that only has reception 75% of the day?

No messages or delayed by days. It is disastrous as I have an eBay business! If I could swap providers but locked in a contract....
Try calling.... 45 mins on hold or try using the call back feature- they take over an hour, if not longer. Once you get through, you go through the same thing every time. No solution as they know they can't fix it! If everyone has this problem, it is about time they think about it being the problem being them! Very disappointed, frustrated and annoyed customer!

I signed up to Vodafone mobile broadband internet about 2 months ago, as I was about to move about an hour out of Melbourne and they told me they had really good reception up there (yeah - right...). Since then I have had countless problems with dropouts, pathetically slow reception, and freezing screens, and with me trying to get a small business off the ground, this caused so many problems. I have contacted them a few times and not once did they mention there were problems. They told me I was probably in a "black spot" as reception up here was supposedly good. The signal strength never gets any better than "poor" and they told me I should buy a pocket wifi to improve the signal, but this costs an extra $100. Im glad I held off, and came across this news article and website, and now know its not just me! And I dont live in a "black spot". I have signed a 2 year contract, and was told the first 6 months would be 1/2 price, yet when I got my first bill recently, there was no mention of this. Another call to them, and they said it would apply from my next bill. Who knows if this will happen? I just want to get out of my contract and go to another provider who has good coverage up here (bit thin on the ground though....not many to choose from).

A sales person at a vodafone store because the phone is only a week old, vodafone would replace it on the spot.... this never happend. Many many calls to the vodafone help line and tech support and I was told the same thing. Yet no one, would change the phone. What they could do, is take my new phone and send it back to nokia and I would have to wait 3 to 4 weeks to find out if the phone is faulty or and if they would give me a new hand set or repire the old one. Also becuase I needed a phone to use for the duration of the 3 to 4 weeks, they would give me a hand set to use but id have to pay $50 to use the phone. Yet every one that I spoke to including the people in India at the Vodafone call center and tech support kept telling me, I have a faulty hand set and that i should get a new hand set on the spot. But they couldnt give me one because have to send the phone away to nokia first. Althought consmer affiars staets that, a faulty product is to be replaced on the spot if the product is less that 28 days old.

They are happy to take ur money but, once they have taken it.... your not a vauled customer any more, vodafone.... fucking people!!!!

Several times a week I talk to a friend for two hours. On a good day we can talk without drop out, on a bad day it can drop out ten times. On one conversation the service drop out was nine times within an hour. We are both vodaphone prepaid mobiles but this also happens when I talk to other friends on different networks. Vodafone need to pick up their game, otherwise I will go back to using the landline. It actually works out cheaper.

I was a 3 customer and never had issues with coverage at all. I joined V in November this year and I was shocked with the lack of network coverage! I live in Seabrook (better known as Point Cook) and have had occasions where I have no signal...I mean, come on...it's not as if I'm on an island. I called V (mind you, it takes approximately 35 minutes just to speak to someone...and when you do, it's kind of pathetic). I managed to get a $30 credit on my first bill after speaking to the Supervisor at the "overseas" call centre. V really need to do something...I was on a very important phone call (phone interview) and the call kept dropping out. I ended up having to use my home phone.

CONSTANT dropouts. Even more common are the times where the person i'm speaking to becomes excruciatingly difficult to hear thanks to brutally poor sound quality. I've tried over four different phones now already to know that this isn't a phone issue, but rather a VodaFail condition. The funny thing is these are the SAME reasons why i ran away from the even more crapulous VIRGIN "service".

i got a nokia x6 on a plan through vodafone, not only was the phone crap but so was the network, most people couldnt ring me due to a message that said the phone you are calling has phone barring active, even though i had paid my bill in full this is what it said, after 6hrs trying to get through to someone, they were quite rude, they finally gave me a code to unlock it, but it only let 1 call through then locked again, then when i moved, i didnt bother changing my address cause when i ttried i was on hold this time for 4 hrs before my fone went flat so i gave up.. ever since i got the fone calls would constantly jrop out so i would have to ring the person like 10 time just to get out 5 words as a result my bill went through the roof, so i decided i wanted out of vodafone and the easiest thing to do rather than stay on hold all day was to just wait till they dissconnected me as a result my excellent credit rating down the drain.

New customer to vodafone, only been with them for a couple of weeks, no reception at home. This phone is a business phone, so not being able to make and receive calls is costing me money, and ruining my reputation.

The maps provided by vodafone clearly show my house is in the coverage area advertised by them, yet I need to walk have way down the street to use the phone.

How do I get out of this contract?
27 Dec 2010 04:19:54 PM: We had a similar issue. Took 6 weeks of negotiating with them, finally called the TIO, but we were able to get out of contract because their maps had been misleading.

During a recent driving holiday around Victoria and South Australia (where we stuck to major highways and roads), my iphone 3G had no phone coverage in areas the Vodafone coverage map indicated full "blue" coverage. My partner's iphone 3G Telstra phone however had perfect cover. When I complained to the pimply 17 year old at the local Vodafone shop I was told there must be something wrong with my phone. Well .... 3 iphones, 4 different SIM cards and 2 more road trips later and reception is still crap!! Maybe the problem's with Vodafone and not my phone. I am also unable to either receive or send emails from my phone despite having double checked all settings with a number of computer geek friends.

Unfortunately was with Vodafone for 22 months. Within the first 2 weeks I knew it was the wrong move to leave Telstra. Zero coverage anywhere 30kms out of Melbourne basically, and 2km out of a major town in the country. Attempted to contact Vodafone within the first month, they responded and were of absolutely no assistance whatsoever. Would be on the couch (at home in Melb), would have coverage then lose it for 5 mins. Get it back and be on the phone, and it would drop out again. Great scam for getting more connection fees to bump up the bills. Plus phone wouldn't even ring sometimes, just go straight to voicemail and then I get the message 2 hours later. Asked to get out of contract because it was not what I paid for and was told I would have to buy out of it. Bull$hit! Stuck it out until a couple of months ago and then switched back to Telstra when I'd had enough - especially when I spend almost 3 months in country NSW working with coverage for probably 10% of the time I was away. And I had to buy out of my last 2 months even. The CEO should have to deal with every problem, then he might understand how bad things are and then something might get done. Then again, perhaps he probably doesn't know how to fix it anyway - just delegates!

Ive had my post paid account for 2 months now, I wish I never signed up for a 12month contract. From day 1 Ive had limited reception to NO reception. My 3G internet was non existent inside or if I ever managed to get it at all it was painfully slow. Over the past 2 weeks though it has just been a nightmare. Constant NO Signals, searchingggggg searchingggggg for a carrier, no internet, MMS taking days to go through, voicemail showing up hours or days later, blah blah, just the same as everyone else.
The only good thing about Vodafone at the moment is my prepaid USB wireless modem for my laptop and that it lets me use it for FREE! without having to recharge because it has trouble with the APN and network settings.
I would be happy with a 2 month credit on my account being the time that Ive had problems from, I dont think thats asking for too much.

My sister is with Vodaphone. There have been days where I have tried to call her and it goes to message bank and in some instances I have gotten a message to say that the phone service doesnt exist. In these instances have had to ring her on the land line to tell her (but of course she is out so nothing can be done until she comes back home). She found the best way to resolve her issue was to go into the Vodaphone shop where she bought her phone, and be in their face. The first time it happened she was told she didnt pay her account so she had to prove she paid it 5 days before it was due. From then on she knows what to do when it happens. However to this day she never receives mms's! On a good note (yes there is only one) when our mum was in hospital she was able to make calls while in the emergency ward to tell me she was there but when I got there I couldnt ring my family to give them an update & I'm with Telstra - go figure...

I have a $80 month plan (includes insurance), and was promised in July 2009 when I took out the 24 month contract that my area - Bendigo (a regional center with over 110,000 residents) would be on the 3G network by the end of August 2009. Its now December 27th 2010 and STILL no 3G!!! WTF? I have NO reception at home and I live 4km from the CBD and can only use my 3G when I head to Melbourne! Vodafone sucks. I can't wait to be out of my contract in July and go to Telstra, at least if I have to pay for a premium service I would like to be able to ... I don't know ... actually use it!

I did find the following note on this website amusing:

"Nick also recommends that if disaster strikes and you need to make a call, switch to 2G temporarily ie, switch off 3G (of course switching away from Vodafone is best). You might even want to keep your phone on 2G in case people are trying to call, can you believe we have to do this?"

I would love to have the option of switching between 3G and 2G BUT because vodafone is 'special needs' in my area I'm lucky to even get half a bar of reception on my high tech wiz-bang iphone which can't be used to its full potential unless I use the Wifi at Uni ... omg why not use a itouch? Vodafone you suck!

I have just realised my 2 year contract with Vodaphone finishes in 11 days. I will be taking my business elsewhere. Lack of coverage when away from home is the major problem as well as poor reception locally. I actually bought a second phone with Telstra PrePaid to use when I can't get Vodaphone coverage! What a ridiculous situation to be in! I only bought the second phone because I was locked in to a plan with Vodaphone.
I don't like any of the Telco's, I've had poor (no) service from the big two but will choose Telstra for the coverage. Telstra, if you are reading this, pull up your socks or I'll continue shopping around! This forum is good timing. I was online checking out other companies yesterday and today Vodafail is in the news.

First things first, I've been a Vodafone customer for around 11-12 years, until recently ( last 2 years or so) I found the call centre staff to be quite helpful, and had no issues with them whatsoever, they even used to give me a new phone every 12 months, 90% of the people I spoke with then seemed to be based in Australia, and there were also a lot more staff, or perhaps just less complaints, anyway, my point is that these issues have only started to arise recently for myself, I'm a Telecommunications rigger myself, we're the guys who install the new network arials and towers, THERE HAS NOT BEEN A MAJOR "ROLLOUT" FOR NEARLY 4 YEARS, with the amount of increased traffic and information that is now transmitted on the 3G network, I expect that even that technology is now stretched to it's limits, the only work that is being carried out on the national 3G network is repair and maintainance, even when we did the last major installation 3-4 years ago the telco company's had to hire workes from oversea's because there was not enough skilled people in Australia
Sorry, a little of the subject there
Christmas day the Vodafone network would not let me send and sought of txt for nearly 3 hours, around 11am it started to work again
Just foundout today that my freinds and employer have been trying to call me for the last 3 days but it has been going straight to my viocemail, I certainly did not divert it and have tried to cancel the deverts but it still is'nt working correctly

Vodafone has no reception in my area. That's fine. Neither do most service providers. Problem with Vodafone is they claim they have reception in order to make a sale. Then, when there's no reception, they claim there is. Hour after hour on hold, speaking to Indian call centres, being passed from incompetent department to incompetent department. In the end, the TIO forced them to refund all my money plus extra. Even sending me the cheque took them a month because they kept sending it to the wrong address.
